Description:
Natural alcánfor is a dextrógira ketone crystalizable or sublimable from the essence of the Cinnamonum camphora, and the synthetic one is obtained from the pinene of the essence of turpentine, formed for the most part by the racemic form of the natural one.

Physical and Chemical Data: Crystalline powder or white or almost white crystalline masses, very volatile. Slightly soluble in water, very soluble in 96% ethanol and light oil, easily soluble in fatty oils, very little soluble in glycerol.
Melting point: 179 ° C.
UV Absorption max .: 292 nm (chloroform).

Properties and Uses:
It has rubefaciente, antipruritic, antiseptic and slightly analgesic action. In addition it is respiratory, carminative, and sedative stimulant. It is used in the form of liniments, alcoholic solutions and ointments, as a revulsive in joint pains, muscular, neuralgias and other similar affections, by frictions. Systemically administered, it has irritating and carminative properties, being used as a mild expectorant. It is also part of nasal decongestion formulas, although its efficacy is doubtful, and in mixed preparations for cardiovascular disorders. The use of camphorated oil is discouraged because it is potentially toxic (increases its absorption). Its use by parenteral route or in irrigation is not advisable, due to the adverse effects.
Dosage: Topically, at 0.05 - 10%. It has been used up to 3% as topical analgesic, and up to 11% as a revulsive. Concentrations above 11% are not safe and in the US they are prohibited.

Side effects:
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, colic, headaches, delirium, dizziness, heat sensation, muscle tremors, seizures epilepticus, CNS depression and coma. Breathing becomes difficult and the breath takes on a characteristic odor, being able to present anuria, coming to epileptic states or even death due to respiratory failure. In children, the use of camphor ointments in the nasal windows is dangerous, as it can cause circulatory collapse.

Precautions:
Do not use in children under 2 years of age, and with caution in older children. It can lead to intoxication in children by mistakenly ingesting camphorated oil instead of another oil. Do not apply to wounds, mucous membranes, damaged skin or the nostrils of children (may cause respiratory collapse).

Incompatibilities:
Potassium permanganate. Camphorated water is incompatible with salts.

Observations:
It produces a liquid or pasty mixture (eutectic mixtures) crushed with menthol, phenol, naphthol, antipyrine, resorcin, chloral hydrate, hydroquinone, salicylic acid, salol, thymol, and other substances. It is volatile at room temperature. Sublima by heat. To incorporate it into the formulas dissolve it in the minimum amount of alcohol or propylene glycol, or even helping us with a little Tween 20. Pack in crystal.

Storage: In tightly closed containers. PROTECT FROM THE LIGHT. Recommended less than 25ºC
