Properties and uses:
Ivy derivatives are obtained from the leaves and stem of the plant. As active principles we can find:
- Whole plant: triterpene saponosides (5%) such as glucosides of hederagenina (hederacósido C and alpha-hederina) and glycosides of oleanolic acid (as hederacósido B and betahederina).
In the leaves: flavonoids (rutósidos and rutinósido), organic acids (caffeic and chlorogenic), traces of alkaloids (emetina), polyacetylenes (falcarinone and falcarinol), phytosterols (sitosterol, stigmasterol, campestrol, cholesterol and espinasterol) and sesquiterpenos And beta-elemene).
-In the trunk: gomorresin and traces of falcarinone (polyacetylene ketone). Pharmacologically the saponosides confer vasoconstricting, antifungal, antibacterial, anthelmintic and antiprotozoal action. The hederina has a spasmolytic and expectorant action. Falcarinone and falcarinol reinforce the antiseptic and antimycotic action, and also falcarinol is slightly sedative. Topically it has an analgesic and lipolytic effect, being used in the form of ointments, liniments, gels, etc ...
It frequently presents in the composition of skin revitalizing gels and creams, since the saponósidos facilitate the skin absorption and the diffusion of other active principles.
For external use it is indicated for wound healing, varicose veins, varicose or trophic ulcers, rheumatism, neuralgias, dissolution of cellulite nodules and in the prevention and treatment of dermal striae.
Side effects: Contact dermatitis (although it is usually with the fresh plant). Also, take into account that the whole plant is toxic, and can cause nausea, vomiting, colic pains, nervous disorders (excitation ...) and result abortive.
Dosing: maximum 4%
Precautions: Oral administration should be made exclusively by prescription and under medical supervision. Monitor with dosing due to toxicity.
Storage: In tightly closed containers. PROTECTING THE LIGHT
